Rock Wall Climbing

Before I say anything I have to admit that sometimes, just sometimes, I surprise even myself.  This was definitely one of those times.

I’d never done this before yesterday.  Not out of lack of interest, more lack of opportunity.  I met a man named Andrew through a Facebook page designed for foreigners living in Daejeon. (Daejeon Peeps)  He’s an avid climber and has been asking me to come out and try climbing. We have finally been getting warmer weather and had a holiday this week so I decided it was the perfect time to try it out.

Housekeeping first. For anyone interested the rock wall is out behind World Cup Stadium, subway stop 119.  Past the parking lot, you’ll see soccer fields and this giant structure.  If you are an avid climber I’m sorry that I can’t provide you with the particulars but I’m sure you could google it.

Becki & I

We acquired a group of about 9 people to head out to the fields that day but only 4 of us climbed.  Myself, Becki, Stephen, and Reed are rockstars.  This is most definitely a work out.

This is Andrew.  He’s a great teacher and coach.  When I got about halfway up and stuck, I heard him from below, “Do it for the dogs!” I laughed so hard I almost fell off the wall.  Also a big thank you to Nadia for serenading me with Britney’s “Stronger.”  You are fabulous, my darling.

I was the first of the group to go and this is where I got stuck-the first time around. The rock juts out at you and you have to climb up around it making yourself slightly less vertical.  I tried but gravity was not in my favor.

Then I came back down in the most graceful way possible.

I’m a classy lady, what can I say.  At least my toes are pointed.

Then the boys went.  And they went significantly further than I did so my competitiveness kicked in.  I was NOT going to let them outdo me.  It’s a terrible quality that I have.

So, I harnessed back in and climbed my way back up…

  All the way up….

Yeah, I beat the boys. I’m pretty proud of that.  I’m the furthest thing from athletic, but I’m quickly learning that I’m quite the adrenaline junkie.

Some things you just never grow out of, I guess.
